I decided to add Shellfish Oil to my lure line for two reasons. First, as a tribute to the legendary Pennsylvania luremaker and fur buyer Nick Wyshinski as it was arguably the most successful product he pioneered. And secondly, Shellfish Oil is an outstanding attractor for various furbearer species! Pure shellfish oil is extremely volatile and I’ve found it lasts far longer at the set if cut with a compatible oil. Most shellfish on the market is cut with cheap vegetable oil which can weaken the odor over time and I’ve found some other oils that work far better for this purpose. Shellfish can be mixed with fish or vegetable oil at a 1:15 ratio and used directly on bait as it has no disagreeable taste. This application is well suited to trapping with dog proofs. In addition to raccoon, mink, and otter, shellfish oil also is highly attractive to canines…and don’t be shy about using it as a call lure at your fisher sets.
